Looking after your piece

A little care
goes a long way.

A well-made frame protects your work for decades. These simple habits keep prints, photographs, canvases and mirrors looking their best.

01 Framed work

Art, prints
and canvases.

  • Light

Keep artwork out of direct sunlight. UV light fades pigments and paper over time. Hang pieces on walls away from strong afternoon sun, and ask us about UV-filtering conservation glazing for valuable or irreplaceable works.

  • Humidity & temperature

Avoid bathrooms, the wall directly above a heater, and external walls that get damp. Rapid changes in humidity make paper and canvas expand and contract and, over time, warp or cockle. A stable room is best.

  • Cleaning

Dust the frame and glass gently with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. To clean the glass, spray a little glass cleaner onto the cloth, never directly onto the glass: liquid can seep behind it and damage the work. Never use glass cleaner on acrylic glazing; use an anti-static acrylic cleaner instead.

  • Handling & hanging

Handle frames by the edges with clean, dry hands. Use wall fixings rated for the weight of the piece, and hang large frames on two points for stability.

  • Canvases

Handle stretched canvases by the timber bars, not the printed surface. Dust lightly with a dry cloth and keep them away from moisture and direct heat.

  • Work of value

For originals and irreplaceable pieces, ask us about conservation framing: acid-free mounting and UV-filtering glass.

02 Mirrors

Keeping
it clear.

  • Cleaning

A soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Spray glass-safe, non-abrasive cleaner onto the cloth, never onto the glass, so nothing runs behind the edge or into the frame.

  • Hanging

Mount on a structurally sound wall, use fixings rated for the weight and hang mirrors on two points. For a heavy or oversized mirror, ask us about installation.

  • Backlit mirrors

Have LED mirrors connected by a licensed electrician, and allow ventilation behind them. See what the LED cover includes on our Warranty page.
