Custom framing

Framed by hand,
in Sydney

Every frame is cut, joined, finished and fitted in our own workshop, not sent out. Tell us what the piece is and we'll talk you through the moulding, the mount and the glass before anything is cut.

01 Types of frames

Six ways
to hold a piece

Six ways we frame, in the words we use at the bench. Five start in the configurator on the right mount; canvas stretching is done by enquiry.

  • A green painting framed right to the edge in a white frame, behind glass 01

    Standard to the edge

    Frame · glass

The piece sits straight in the frame, behind glass, right to the edge. No border.

Suits Prints and posters that fill the frame.

Design one: Standard to the edge
  • The same painting in a bronze frame with a cream mat board border 02

    Mat board framing

Frame · mat board · glass

A mat board border around the piece, under glass. The classic look.

Suits Photographs and works on paper: the mat holds the piece off the glass.

    Design one: Mat board framing
  • The painting set back in a deep black box frame behind a mat board border 03

    Set back

    Recessed shadow box · glass

A deep box with a mat board border, so the piece sits back from the glass.

    Suits Jerseys, medals and memorabilia.

    Design one: Set back
  • The painting raised on a backing board in a dark timber frame, its edges showing 04

    Float

    Floated on a backing

The piece is raised on a backing board with its edges showing, so it appears to float.

Suits Works on paper with deckled edges, fabric and garments.

    Design one: Float
  • The painting as a canvas stretched over timber bars, with no frame 05

    Canvas stretched

    Timber bars · no frame

Your canvas stretched by hand over timber bars, ready to hang as it is.

    Suits Loose or rolled canvases.

    Ask us: Canvas stretched
  • The stretched canvas set in a thin timber float frame with a shadow gap 06

    Canvas float frame

    Stretched canvas · float frame

A stretched canvas set in a float frame, with a shadow gap around it.

    Suits Canvases, painted or printed.

    Design one: Canvas float frame

02 Process & materials

What a frame
is made of

A moulding, a mat, the glass and, if you need it, the print. These are the real options, from the range we frame with every day.

White core or black core

  • White core The cut bevel shows as a fine white line around the window, whatever the colour of the mat.

03 Looking after it

A little care
goes a long way

Light
Keep it out of direct sun, which fades pigment and paper over time.
Damp and heat
Not in a bathroom, above a heater or on an external wall that gets damp.
Cleaning
A soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Spray cleaner onto the cloth, never onto the glass. Acrylic takes its own anti-static cleaner.
Hanging
Hold frames by the edges, use fixings rated for the weight and hang large pieces on two points.

Why a size limit? The configurator's largest size follows the mat board sheet: boards come in fixed sheet sizes, so a piece can only be as big as the sheet. Oversized, complicated or extra-detail pieces come through the enquiry form.
